If you've been dealing with knee pain, stiffness, or a nagging soft tissue injury that just won't quit, you may want to consider laser therapy as part of your treatment plan. It's one of the newer, non-invasive options we offer at Elyussif Orthopedic & Knee Pain Center, using our Class IV Laser — and patients are often surprised at how simple, comfortable, and effective it can be.
Here's what it is, what it treats, how it works, and how to know if it might be a good fit for you.
What Is Class IV Laser Therapy?
Laser therapy is a treatment that uses focused light energy to stimulate the body's own healing processes. Class IV lasers are used to deliver light energy deep into muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint tissue without breaking the skin.
Our laser uses multiple near-infrared wavelengths, which allow it to reach both superficial and deeper tissue layers depending on what's being treated. Treatments are quick, painless, and require no downtime — most patients describe the sensation as a gentle, soothing warmth over the treated area.
What Is It Used For?
We use laser therapy to help manage a wide range of orthopedic conditions, including:
- Knee osteoarthritis and joint pain
- Tendonitis
- Sprains and strains
- Muscle spasm and soft tissue injury
- Post-surgical swelling, pain, inflammation, scar tissue, and stiffness
- Bursitis and other inflammatory conditions
- Chronic pain that hasn't responded well to other conservative measures
It's often used alongside — not instead of — other parts of your treatment plan, such as physical therapy, bracing, or injections, to help speed recovery and reduce reliance on oral pain medication.
How Does It Work?
The science behind laser therapy is called photobiomodulation (PBM). Here's the process in simple terms:
- Light penetrates the skin. The laser emits near-infrared light that passes through the skin and into the underlying muscle, tendon, and joint tissue.
- Cells absorb the light energy. Once absorbed, this energy boosts production of the fuel your cells use to carry out repair and recovery functions.
- Healing accelerates at the cellular level. With more energy available, cells become more active: blood flow improves, inflammation decreases, and tissue repair processes speed up.
- Pain and swelling decrease. As circulation improves and inflammation calms down, patients typically notice less pain, less stiffness, and better mobility over the course of treatment.
Each session typically takes just a few minutes, and most treatment plans involve a series of visits over several weeks for the best results, similar to physical therapy.
Is Laser Therapy Right for Me?
Laser therapy tends to be a good option for patients who:
- Have ongoing knee, joint, or soft tissue pain that hasn't fully responded to rest, ice, or over-the-counter medication
- Are looking for a non-invasive, drug-free option to add to their treatment plan
- Want to reduce inflammation and swelling after an injury or procedure
- Are trying to avoid or delay more invasive interventions
- Have arthritis-related stiffness that flares with activity or weather changes
That said, laser therapy isn't right for everyone. It's generally not recommended for patients who are pregnant, have an active cancer or suspected tumor in the treatment area, have a pacemaker near the treatment site, or are being treated over infected skin. Certain medications that increase light or heat sensitivity may also be a consideration.
The best way to know if laser therapy fits your specific situation is to talk it through with your doctor. During your visit, we'll review your history, your current symptoms, and your overall treatment goals to determine whether laser therapy should be part of your care plan — and how it can work alongside other treatments you may already be receiving.
